Smoking is smoking. If you only smoke pot, it makes you a pot-smoker, not a non-smoker.
Surgeon General Warns of Secondhand Smoke
- By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer
Tuesday, June 27, 2006

(06-27) 08:04 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Separate smoking sections don't cut it: Only smoke-free buildings and public places truly protect nonsmokers from the hazards of breathing in other people's tobacco smoke, says a long-awaited surgeon general's report.

Some 126 million nonsmokers are exposed to secondhand smoke, what U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona repeatedly calls "involuntary smoking" that puts people at increased risk of death from lung cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.

Moreover, there is no risk-free level of exposure to someone else's drifting smoke, declares the report issued Tuesday — a conclusion sure to fuel already growing efforts at public smoking bans nationwide. Fourteen states have passed what are considered comprehensive smoke-free workplace laws, those that include restaurants and bars.

But the surgeon general is especially concerned about young children who can't escape their parents' addiction in search of cleaner air: Just over one in five children is exposed to secondhand smoke at home, where workplace bans don't reach. Those children are at increased risk of SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome; lung infections such as pneumonia; ear infections; and more severe asthma.

"Exposure to secondhand smoke remains an alarming public health hazard," Carmona said. "Nonsmokers need protection through the restriction of smoking in public places and workplaces" — and by smokers voluntarily not puffing around children.

The report won't surprise doctors. It isn't a new study but a compilation of the best research on secondhand smoke, the most comprehensive federal probe since the last surgeon general's report on the topic in 1986, which declared secondhand smoke a cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.

Since then, numerous other health agencies have linked to secondhand smoke to heart disease and other illnesses. Earlier this year, California health officials estimated that secondhand smoke kills about 3,400 nonsmoking Americans annually from lung cancer, 46,000 from heart disease, and 430 from SIDS.

The new surgeon general's report doesn't retally the deaths, but it cites that toll.

The tobacco industry and some businesses, particularly restaurant and bar owners concerned about loss of smoking customers, have challenged some of the broadest public smoking bans in cities and states.

The new report gives new scientific ammunition against those challenges, said Matthew Myers of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

"There is no longer a scientific controversy that secondhand smoke is a killer," he said. The report "eliminates any excuse from any state or city for taking halfway measures to restrict smoking, or permitting smoking in any indoor workplace."

Among other findings:

_Separating smokers from nonsmokers, cleaning the air and ventilation systems don't eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.

_There is good evidence that comprehensive smoking bans, like those in New York City and Boston, don't economically hurt the hospitality industry.

_Workplace smoking restrictions not only reduce secondhand smoke but discourage active smoking by employees.

_Secondhand smoke can act on the arteries so quickly that even a brief pass through someone else's smoke can endanger people at high risk of heart disease. Don't ever smoke around a sick relative, Carmona advised

_Living with a smoker increases a nonsmoker's risk of lung cancer and heart disease by up to 30 percent.

_There isn't proof that secondhand smoke causes breast cancer, although the evidence is suggestive. California earlier this year cited that link in becoming the first state to declare secondhand smoke a toxic air pollutant.

_On the plus side, blood measurements of a nicotine byproduct show that exposure to secondhand smoke has decreased. Levels dropped by 75 percent in adults and 68 percent in children between the early 1990s and 2002. However, not only has children's exposure declined less rapidly, but levels of that byproduct among children are more than twice as high as in nonsmoking adults.

Changes are Guaranteed Effective.

Save Your Money!

Save Your Health!

My clients have said: "I have been smoke-free since the first session we met! I can't believe how few cravings I have experienced. Hypnosis really works. Thank you so much! You may have saved my life!!!!"

In 2004, actor Matt Damon used hypnosis to stop a two pack per day habit he had had since his teens. You can do it too! All you need to do is sit back and relax while the power of your unconscious mind does the work and new healthy habits are created. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything against your will, but it can really HELP you do things that are in alignment with your will...like stop smoking and start feeling good again. So if you are ready to stop smoking, this is the way to do it. You don't need willpower (it doesn't work for very long), you just need to be willing to try something new.

There is little or no weight gain, cravings, or irritability. This is the most effective way to stop smoking. Throw all cigarettes away before arriving!

Two sessions is $240 ($220 pre-paid. Save $20.)
For most people two sessions are required to quit smoking for good.

Exceptions:
Users of smokeless tobacco, people who have been smoking for three or more decades, and people who average more than a pack per day sometimes require 3 sessions or more to quit.

A single two-hour smoking cessation seminar (which includes a one hour hypnosis session) is also available for fraternities, organizations and companies. Call for prices.

Things to do before your first appointment:

* No caffeine a few hours before your appointment.
* Throw away all of your cigarettes.
* Clean your windshield, empty your ashtray and deodorize your car.
* Clean your household ashtrays and put them away in the closet (for guests who smoke).
* Say "goodbye" to every cigarette you smoke between now and your appointment.
* Imagine your life as a non-smoker as productive, abundant and happy.
* Begin drinking lots of water.
* Begin a daily exercise routine to clear toxins and to balance your biochemistry.

Did you know that...
Hypnosis has been proven the most effective means of quitting smoking?

In 1968 the American Journal of Clinical Hypnotherapy published a report by a doctor using hypnosis on 1000 smokers. After 18 months 94% were still non-smokers after only 3 sessions of hypnosis.

In 1992 a large research project into stop smoking methods was undertaken at the University of Iowa. This comparison of over 600 scientific studies placed hypnosis as the most effective means of smoking cessation available.

Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, and Kevin Costner have all used hypnotherapy to stop smoking.

Interesting report out of the UK

Smokers spend £92,000 on their deadly habit
Author: Nick Gibbens

10 Oct 2005

The average British smoker spends £92,000 on cigarettes in a lifetime, according to a survey by Clerical Medical. This figure equates to 373,302 cigarettes, or 18,665 packs for every smoker.

On a yearly basis that breaks down to £1500 spent on tobacco which works out to 6,060 individual fags (303 packets). In a day a smoker burns through 15.24 fags which in a week totals 106.68 - but with the normal smoker admitting to an increase in their usual daily quota when they go out that weekly figure tops 116.

And collectively UK smokers get through 72 billion fags a year (3.6 billion packs), costing a shocking £17 billion. Laid out in a line all those cigarettes would stretch over four million miles, and circumnavigate the earth 154 times.

"We all know about the health problems associated with smoking but we wanted to find about out the wealth implications associated with the habit," said John Hiew, managing director of Clerical Medical.

"It’s a staggering amount of money British smokers spend whichever way you look at it, and that’s a hell of a lot of disposable income just going up in smoke. If people were to consider putting the money they spend each month on cigarettes into a savings plan not only would they probably live longer, but they could have an extra income of thousands of pounds a year."

Even social smokers - who only light up when they go out to bars, clubs or restaurants - spend over £11,000 in a lifetime. Part-timers still manage to inhale 14.55 cigarettes a week, in a year that stacks up to 756 fags (37 packs), which equals £186 per year.

The research also revealed that 83 per cent of respondents have tried giving up smoking at least three times. A third admitted that they lasted only a couple of days, while the same amount crumbled after two months, while 15 per cent managed a year. Startlingly one in ten people said they sparked up again after more than twenty years of resisting the temptation to smoke.

Northern Ireland folk emerged as the biggest smokers, ahead of Londoners and those from the North West.

Smoking Regions:
Northern Ireland
London
North West
South West
Yorkshire
South East
Wales
Midlands
Scotland

The on-line survey of 3,000 respondents was completed during the first two weeks of September.
LIFE'S A FAG
Smokers spend £91,832.43 on 373,302 cigs in their lifetime
By Richard Smith

SMOKERS spend an average £91,832.43 feeding their habit, a study said yesterday.

In their life they will puff through 373,302 cigs. That is 18,665 packs, or 15.24 coffin nails a day.

Action on Smoking and Health said: "This proves how wasteful and addictive smoking is. Not only can it kill you, it also costs enormous amounts of money."

UK smokers buy a breathtaking 72 billion fags a year at a cost of £17billion. Laid end to end, they would stretch for more than four million miles.

The average smoker will spend £1,493.22 on 6,060 cigs each year, according to a survey of 3,000 people by insurers Clerical Medical.

They would have to stick at it for 61 years to spend the £91,800 total. Even part-time puffers smoke 14.55 cigarettes a week. That is £11,000 in a lifetime.

Eighty three per cent of smokers have tried to give up at least three times. A third were fag free for only two days. The same number gave up for two months, while 15 per cent managed a year. Ten per cent lit up again after more than 20 years.

Those living in Northern Ireland smoked the most, followed by Londoners and people in the North West and East Anglia.

Clerical Medical boss John Hiew said: "There's a hell of a lot of disposable income going up in smoke. If smokers put their money in a savings plan they'd probably live longer and have thousands of pounds extra a year."

FIVE things you could buy for £90,000: Three new Porsche Boxsters; more than 100 return trips to Australia; a villa on the Costa Blanca; 1,875 tickets to watch Chelsea; three-bed house in the North-East of England.

Expensive litter: Tossed cigarette ignites SUV

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, February 17, 2005
San Francisco Chronicle

No ifs, ands or butts about it, Jonathan Fish learned an expensive lesson today about the dangers of littering.

The 20-year-old San Francisco resident was rolling across the upper deck of the Bay Bridge at 10:40 a.m., smoking a cigarette. When he got to Harrison Street, he rolled down the window of his white 2004 Ford Expedition SUV and tossed out the butt.

Instead of bounding along the pavement, however, the still-lit cigarette blew back in and set the interior of his $30,000 SUV ablaze.

Black smoke filled the vehicle. Fish pulled over to the far left-hand lane about 100 feet from the Harrison Street exit and leaped from the Expedition, but instead of putting the SUV in park, he left it in neutral.

The flaming Expedition rolled driverless into a guard rail by the exit, where it crashed to a stop and burned to the frame.

California Highway Patrol officers and fire crews arrived and closed the off-ramp until 11:45 a.m., tying up traffic all the way back to the toll plaza. Fish had his hair singed but was otherwise unharmed.

Tossing a burning cigarette onto the road is a misdemeanor, and even though this particular cigarette never actually hit the road, Fish will probably be cited all the same, the CHP said. The citation can be up to $1,000.

"Obviously, this guy is fortunate that he wasnt a fatality and that he did not receive any more serious injuries than singed hair," said Officer Shawn Chase of the California Highway Patrol.

I have asthma. And I'm allergic to cigarette smoke (or it's the same thing, smoke makes me sick)

Most folks are polite, but I've been getting pissed off, due to patrons holding the door open so they can smoke and talk to someone inside. It's not a huge bar and my friends (who smoke) always grab the pool table farthest from the smoking area so I can breathe.

I'm normally somewhat shy with strangers. But lately I've been getting rather aggressive and telling them shut the door, NOW !
I've even pushed a drunk out the door and shut it behind them (after asking them 2x earlier to keep it closed). Later I told them it was nothing personal, just my need to avoid the hospital emergency room. The idiot had the gall to say "my father had asthma and my uncle died of cancer, so I understand your point, but people who come to bars like to smoke when they drink".

Is it stupid to expect to go to a bar and breathe at the same time?

Last week I yelled at an older man who lit up inside the bar and
blew a big puff of smoke inside before stepping outside to smoke.

And then there was the drunk wandering thru while smoking. My
girlfriend grabbed his cigarette and put it out. This same genius insisted he was driving himself home.

The drunks have an excuse (lame, but at least it's an excuse).
The sober rude smokers are the ones I'm having problems with. I'm 5'3" and have never picked a fight. The bar owner is
supportive as are her staff.

I hope to continue to play at this bar. Without carrying a mask.

ps does it bother anyone else that smokers congregate at every door so you have to breathe smoke to exit almost every business?

So rant mode off......

have a good weekend.

Tobacco exec challenged about key stance in trial
Peter Kaplan
Reuters
WASHINGTON - The departing executive chairman of Reynolds American Inc. refused to concede that cigarette smoking causes disease during testimony on Monday in the government's $280 billion tobacco industry racketeering trial.
Long-time Reynolds executive Andrew Schindler defended Reynolds' view that cigarettes "may contribute" to disease in "some individuals" as a government attorney raised the company's position as an example of how cigarette makers have deceived the public about the dangers of smoking.
U.S. public health officials concluded decades ago that smoking leads to lung cancer and a range of other serious diseases. Some other tobacco companies, such as Altria Group Inc.'s (MO.N) Philip Morris USA, a co-defendent, now concede the point unequivocally.
Schindler was asked to explain why Reynolds still does not acknowledge - without conditions - that smoking causes lung cancer and other diseases.
He said he had decided against changing the company's stance several years ago after consulting with scientists at company.
"They all concluded that they were comfortable with the Web site the way it is," said Schindler, who stepped down as chief executive of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings last summer when it bought Brown & Williamson in 2004 and emerged from the deal with a new name.
He was met with skepticism when he told the presiding judge that the company's current position is "a pretty straightforward expression of my own feelings" on the issue.
"If it's so straightforward, why not use simple language to convey it?" asked U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler.
Schindler is due to leave Reynolds American next week.
The government's suit, filed in 1999, targets Altria and its Philip Morris unit; Loews' Lorillard Tobacco unit, which has a tracking stock, Carolina Group (CG.N); Vector Group Ltd.'s (VGR.N) Liggett Group; Reynolds American Inc.'s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco and British American Tobacco Plc (BATS.L) unit British American Tobacco Investments Ltd.
The Justice Department wants the industry to give up $280 billion in past profits and is seeking tougher rules on marketing, advertising and warnings on tobacco products.
Tobacco companies deny they conspired to promote smoking and say the government has no grounds to pursue them after they drastically changed marketing practices as part of the 1998 settlement with state attorneys general.
Justice Department attorney Sharon Eubanks showed the judge a list of statements by Reynolds over the years that she said were designed to confuse the public.
The statements included a 1990 letter responding to a group of school children that said scientists "do not know the cause or causes of diseases associated with smoking."
Reynolds' stance on the hazards of smoking, as posted on the company Web site, reads: "We produce a product that has significant and inherent health risks for a number of serious diseases, and may contribute to causing these diseases in some individuals."
Schindler told the judge the company planned to drop the word "may" to come in line with Brown & Williamson, a unit of British American Tobacco that Reynolds acquired last year.
"You could change the Web site in a heartbeat if you wanted to," Eubanks told Schindler.
